The John & Mickie Davis family cemetery is located on the edge of Walnut Creek Road in Pittsylvania County. It is approximately ½ mile north of Mill Creek Rd on the left. (GPS Coordinates N 36° 37.510, W 79° 25.374). The land occupied by the graveyard, years earlier, belonged to William Beavers, whose mill operated nearby. John Davis & Jeff Cox bought the land in 1899. A once nice, but now rusty and mangled wrought iron fence partially surrounds the old burying ground.
John Davis, the progenitor of this Davis clan, was a son of John Davis & Frances Harvey, who married in 1822 . The younger John married Miss Mickie Logan on January 18, 1859 in Caswell County, NC. He was a Confederate veteran. Mickie was an illegitimate daughter of Minerva Logan. The identity of Mickie’s father remains a mystery.
John & Mickie Logan Davis had the following children in their 1880 census household: Henry, Rosa, John, Ann, Jeff, Adline, Charlie, & Pompie. Jeff and Rosa are buried alongside their parents.
Jefferson Larkin Davis, son of John & Mickie, married Lucy Lewis Horton, widow of Robert Horton, on October 28, 1885 in Caswell County, NC. Lucy’s parents were Isham & Elizabeth Phelps. Her father, Isham, who died in 1864, served in the Virginia militia during the War of 1812, for which his widow, Elizabeth Moore Phelps, received a pension. Jeff & Lucy Davis had the following children: Eddie, Howard, Walter, Raleigh, & Pearlie.
About a year and a half after Lucy’s death, Jeff Davis, then past 70 years old, married Miss Elizabeth Francis, who was about 30. The infant, Anne Elizabeth Davis, may have been a daughter of this new union, or a grandchild of Jeff & Lucy.
Rosa B. Davis married Jefferson B. Cox on January 22, 1885 in Pittsylvania County, VA. Jeff was a son of William & Elizabeth Cox . In 1900, Jeff & Rosa had been married for fifteen years and had no children.
William P. Phelps, a son of Isham & Elizabeth, is also interred in the Davis Cemetery along with his wife, the former Lubinda Bray, daughter of Christopher & Elsa Bray. According to Binda’s obituary, she had no children.
