Keesee Graveyard

The Keesee family is found in Pittsylvania County all the way back to it’s formation in 1767. In this old graveyard near Green Pond are buried Jeremiah Keesee and his wife Sarah Burch “Else” Keesee (her maiden name was Burch, so “Else” was probably a nickname). Jeremiah was a member of Capt. Joshua Abston’s militia company in 1775.

Epitaph Stone

another interesting stone is found in this graveyard bearing a rather cryptic old inscription:
TAKE NOTIS
ALL YOU THAT
PASS BY AS
YOU ARE NOW
SO WONS I WAS

This is a variation of an epitaph that has been found on numerous 18th & early 19th century tombstones, which starts in various ways, but basically reads as follows:

REMEMBER ME AS YOU PASS BY,
AS YOU ARE NOW SO ONCE WAS I,
AS I AM NOW SO YOU WILL BE,
PREPARE FOR DEATH AND FOLLOW ME
