Thomas was born on May 8, 1848. His parents were Robert P. Samuel and Elizabeth Pugh Samuel. In October 1864, at Petersburg, Thomas enlisted in the Danville Artillery. His older brother William had been with them since 1861. Thomas was with them until the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
On Aug 26, 1866, Thomas married Julia Ann Johnson Edwards in Pittsylvania County. They raised a large family together before Julia’s death in 1898. Thomas died on May 11, 1913 at Western State Hospital in Staunton, Virginia after having been a patient there for eight months. His body was returned home for burial and we believe he is buried in the family cemetery off present day Hunting Hills Road in Pittsylvania County.
